HomeDifferent portions, same dinner

The practical planning guide

Different needs do not have to mean two dinners.

Sharing a meal is not the same as sharing a nutrition target. Here is a simple way to organise dinners for two adults without planning the week twice.

Choose a shared recipe before deciding quantities

Begin with a meal both adults can and want to eat. Check preferences and ingredients first. If one person needs an ingredient avoided, do not assume a smaller portion makes it suitable.

A meal with separate components can be easier to portion: for example, a main ingredient, a starch and vegetables. This is an illustration of organisation, not a recommendation for a particular diet.

Write down each person’s ingredient quantities

Keep the recipe and method together, but note quantities for each adult. Do not assume one person should simply eat half—or twice—of everything the other eats. Appropriate amounts depend on individual needs.

When using a planned recipe, check whether weights refer to raw or cooked food. Follow the stated recipe basis consistently; mixing raw and cooked weights can make portioning confusing.

Combine the shop, then portion the finished meal

Add the quantities needed for both adults before checking what is already in the cupboard. Make one shopping list, then adjust for the packs you can actually buy.

Follow food-safety guidance while cooking and storing leftovers. Keep each person’s intended portion clear rather than assuming equal servings from one pan.

How MyPocketPT brings this together

MyPocketPT Couples supports shared recipes with individual portions, personal estimated nutrition targets and a combined shopping list. Each adult also keeps their own training and progress.

The app provides planning guidance, not a guarantee that every dietary need can share every recipe. For allergies, medical conditions or specialist nutritional needs, seek appropriate professional advice.

A few useful answers

Before you get started.

Can two people with different goals eat the same dinner?

Often a shared recipe can be organised with different portions, but suitability depends on each person’s needs and the recipe. A shared dinner does not mean both adults need the same nutrition target.

Does the guide give me a calorie target?

No. This guide explains a planning approach. MyPocketPT estimates personal targets from setup information; individual clinical needs require appropriate professional advice.
